Protection of River-bank using Jute-Synthetic blended Geotextiles

A successful field trial was conducted for protection of a part of the bank of Mayurakshi River using jute-synthetic blended geotextiles. The height and angle of gradient of the bank was approximately 9.0 m and 60 o respectively. The geotextile fabrics were developed at NIRJAFT, using jute (in cross direction) and polyolefin tape yarn (in machine direction). The fabric samples contain more than 60% jute (wt/wt). It may be well appreciated that in most of the cases, no single fibrous element offers all the desirable property to a textile material for a particular end-use. Each fibre has its own advantageous and disadvantageous properties. The disadvantageous properties can be minimized to some extent, if not eliminated, by incorporating certain percentage of other natural or man-made fibre(s). The developed fabrics having much balanced property parameters as compared to all-synthetic or all jute geotextiles are more durable, lighter in weight and less costly than 100% jute geotextiles, and much cheaper than 100% synthetic (imported) geotextile fabrics.

LS nod for national Jute Board bill
-
New Delhi: The Lok Sabha today passed a bill to establish a National Jute Board for development of the jute sector. The National Jute Board Bill-2006 was passed by the Lok Sabha by a voice vote after a brief discussion. Textiles Minister Shankarsinh Vaghela said the Board will work for the development of the cultivation, manufacture and marketing of jute and jute products.

The Board will constitute of three MPs, three jute farmers, three jute workers, two jute experts and two representatives of the micro, small and medium enterprises, Vaghela said. Participating in the discussion, Shiv Sena member Suresh Prabhu wanted the Board to include persons who would be well-versed in marketing jute products. Prabhu also wanted an additional tax on artificial fibres to discourage their use as such materials affected the environment.

Members also wanted representation of the Jute Corporation of India (JCI) on the Board but Vaghela said the matter could be considered at a later stage. "Let the Board come into existence. JCI will be included in the course of time," the Minister said.
