Capacity Building Programme inaugurated at ICAR-NIRJAFT, Kolkata, December 11, 2017.



ICAR-NIRJAFT, December 11, 2017:

ICAR-Sponsored 10 days Short Course on “Recent advances in processing technologies for Value addition of jute and allied fibers” was inaugurated in ICAR-National Institute of Research on Jute and Allied Fibre Technology, Kolkata on 11.12.2017.

Dr. L. Ammayappan, Senior Scientist & Course Director welcomed the participants and elaborated the objectives and contents of the short course. Dr. Alok Nath Roy, Director (Acting) briefed about the need of product diversification from jute & allied fibres in his address. Dr. S.K. Biswas, Ex-Director, DJD, Guest of Honour of the event highlighted the issues on marketing of raw jute and the problems faced by the jute sector in competition with the synthetic fibres.

Dr. Swapan Kumar Ghosh, Professor  & Head, Department of Jute and Fibre Technology, Institute of Jute Technology, University of Calcutta, Kolkata & Chief Guest of the program stressed the development of cost-effective and sustainable processing technologies for jute based textiles. He also urged for collaborative R&D work on the jute based technical textiles, functional textiles and composite products.

Training manual of the short course was released by the chief guest. Thirteen participants from different states of the country participated in the short course. Dr. R.K. Ghosh, Scientist & Course Co-Director, has delivered the hearty vote of thanks & Dr. K.K. Samanta, Scientist & Course Co-Director has coordinated the event.


World Soil Day was celebrated by ICAR-NIRJAFT, Kolkata, December 5, 2017.



ICAR-NIRJAFT, December 5, 2017: World Soil Day was celebrated by ICAR-NIRJAFT on 5th December, 2017. Print outs of two banners sent by council through e-mail on 4th December, 2017 were displayed on the two gates of the institute. The matters of the banners were translated to Bengali and print out of the banner was taken for celebration of World Soil Day with the farmers at village. Two scientists and two technical officers of ICAR-NIRJAFT were nominated by the competent authority for World Soil Day celebration under the leadership of Dr Biplab Saha, Principal Scientists, Soil Physics. Dr Biplab Saha along with Dr Atul Kumar Singha, Scientist (Microbiology), Dr Debabrata Das, Technical Officer (Agronomy) and Sh. Koushik Mitra, Technical Officer went to the Babpur village under Barasat-1 block of the district North 24-parganas for the same purpose. A meeting was held at the premises of the farmers’ club of the village with 50 farmers comprising of male and female participants. At first Dr Biplab Saha gave brief introduction of the importance of World Soil Day celebration and showed the participants video sent by council on inauguration of Soil Health Card apps by Honourable Agriculture Minister, Sh Radha Mohan Singh. Then Dr Biplab Saha delivered a lecture on importance of soil to our life, demographic pressure on soil health at present, need to maintain soil health through different methods for sustainable agriculture in view of climate change with special emphasis on carbon sequestration in soil. He also described the role of jute in organic carbon sequestration, agro-textile materials for soil conservation and advised to do soil management on the basis of soil health card. Dr Atul Singha emphasised on role of microbes in maintaining soil health. Dr Debabrata Das discussed about various cropping sequences and systems for improving soil health and overall agricultural production. Then the entire team interacted with farmers on various issues of soil management and agricultural production. At the end, ICAR-NIRJAFT team conveyed sincere thanks to the participants.



Agriculture Education Day observed at ICAR-NIRJAFT, Kolkata, December 4, 2017.



ICAR-NIRJAFT, December 4, 2017: ICAR- NIRJAFT, Kolkata has observed the “Agriculture Education Day 2017 “to commemorate the birth anniversary of first president of independent India and union Minister of Agriculture, Bharat Ratna Dr. Rajendra Prasad. On this occasion Dr. N.C. Pan, Director (Officiating) addressed the students & highlighted upon the importance of agriculture in strengthening Indian economy.

Dr. Deb Prasad Ray, Senior Scientist has given a presentation on “Agricultural Education in India: Present status & future perspectives” in which he has elaborated upon the history of Indian Agriculture & its growth over the years; revolutions in Indian agriculture through research & development; modernization in agricultural practices and agricultural education opportunities in India & Abroad. After the presentation the students had interacted with scientists regarding the scope of agricultural education for seeking a better future.

On this occasion debate & essay writing competition on the themes “Agriculture: The back bone of Indian Economy” & “The future of Indian Economy lies in Agriculture” respectively were organized among the school students. The winners were presented with certificates & trophies. Visit of students to different laboratories and facilities were also a part of the programme where live demonstration of institute technologies was performed.

Dr. S. Debnath, Principal Scientist & Dr. S.C. Saha, Senior Scientist have demonstrated the Institute technologies. Dr. Laxmikanta Nayak, Senior Scientist and Er. Tarun Kundu, Technical Assistant has coordinated the event. Dr. L. Ammayappan has offered hearty vote of thanks to the participating students, teachers and NIRJAFT staff members.


One day awareness workshop-cum-IPR Clinic organized at ICAR-NIRJAFT, Kolkata, November 18, 2017.



ICAR-NIRJAFT, November 18, 2017:

A one day awareness workshop cum IPR Clinic was organised at ICAR-National Institute of Research on Jute & Allied Fibre Technology, Kolkata 18th November 2017 in the institute BPD Hall by ITMU. Scientists of the institute were participated in this programme.

Dr. Alok Nath Roy, Director & Chairman, ITMU of this institute delivered the welcome address. In his address, he sensitised the importance of the workshop as well as stressed the scientists to focus on the invention which has more benefits for their stakeholders.

In the first technical session, Dr. Deb Prasad Ray, Senior Scientist, QEI Division of the institute presented his proposed patent followed by sensitisation of the patenting process by Mr. Sushil Kumar Mitra, Retd. Assistant Controller of Patents, Kolkata. He also delivered the lecture on “An overview on IPR & Technology management” and sensitised the steps in the drafting and filing of a patent.

In the second technical session, Dr. Laxmi Kanta Nayak, Senior Scientist, ToT Division of the institute presented his proposed patent followed by sensitisation of the patent by Mr. Anjan Sen, Managing & Principal Attorney, Patent Attorney & IPR Advocate- Anjan Sen & Associates, Kolkata. Scientists of the institute have also interacted with the experts regarding the IPR issues. Dr. Samir Baran Roy, Principal Scientist & Secretary, ITMU and Dr.L.Ammayappan, Senior Scientist have coordinated the workshop.


Training on "Manufacture of Jute Handicrafts" at KVK, Jajpur, Odisha, November 14, 2017.



ICAR-NIRJAFT, November 14, 2017:

A 5-day hands on training programme on “Manufacture of jute Handicrafts” commenced on 14th November, 2017 at KVK, Jajpur, Odisha. The training programme is sponsored under ABI-NIRJAFT project.

Dr. Laxmikanta Nayak, Senior Scientist, ICAR-NIRJAFT, Kolkata briefed the trainees about the market demand of jute goods & entrepreneurship development opportunities in this sector.

Dr. Tilottama Pattnaik, Senior Scientist & In-charge, KVK, Jajpur highlighted upon the value addition in jute & allied fibres through product diversifications.

Mrs. Dharitri Patra, Scientist, KVK, Jajpur coordinated the inaugural function and offered a hearty vote of thanks.

Twenty women trainees from Jajpur district of Odisha have participated in this training programme.


Vigilance Awareness Week celebrated at ICAR-NIRJAFT, Kolkata on October 30 to November 04, 2017.



ICAR-NIRJAFT, October 30 to November 04, 2017:

ICAR-NIRJAFT, Kolkata observed Vigilance Awareness Week Programme in the Institute. This year the main focus of Vigilance Awareness Week is “My Vision –Corruption Free India”. Pledge taking Ceremony was administered to all officials and staff on 30th October, 2017. Week long programme like Debate Competition, Quiz Competition and Essay Writing Competition was arranged in the Institute as well as in a nearby school, Mansur Habibullah Memorial Institute, Kolkata. Closing Ceremony for Vigilance Awareness Week programme was held on 3rd November, 2017. In this Ceremony Dr. N.C. Pan, Vigilance Officer has given welcome address. Dr. A.N. Roy, Director, ICAR-NIRJAFT elaborated the importance of Vigilance Awareness Week. In this occasion, Chief Guest was Mr. S.D. Chand, Joint Director, Enforcement Directorate, Kolkata. He has given the overview of vigilance awareness and different ways to make India corruption free as well as government rules and regulation in this regard. Different prizes were given to the school children. Sh. R.D. Sharma, Assistant Director (Official Language) proposed vote of thanks.


Visit of School Children at ICAR-NIRJAFT, Kolkata on August 31, 2017.



ICAR-NIRJAFT, August 31, 2017:

A group of 23 students of class 12 (humanities stream) from St. Augustine's Day School, 47 B, Ripon Street, Kolkata-700017 led by Mrs. Shukla Majumder & Mr. A.K Singh had visited the Institute on 31.08.2017. Research activities from extraction of fibres to dissemination of technologies of the institute NIRJAFT were described to them by Dr. V. B. Shambhu, Senior Scientist, ToT Division, Dr. S. C. Saha, Senior Scientist, QEI Division, Dr. S. Debnath , Principal Scientist, MP Division , Dr. L. Ammayappan, Senior Scientist, CBP Division and Dr. S. Das, Scientist, ToT Division respectively.  Dr. Alok Nath Roy, Director (Acting), finally addressed the students and described the research and developmental activities of the institute on jute and allied fibres. Dr. L. Ammayappan & Mr. S. Das coordinated the program.


Brainstorming workshop on Sisal grading & Electronic Instrumentation at Sisal Research Station, Bamra, Odisha on August 25, 2017.



Bamra, August 25, 2017:

ICAR-National Institute of Research on Jute & Allied Fibre Technology, Kolkata in collaboration with Sisal Research Station, a unit of ICAR-Central Research Institute for Jute & Allied Fibres, Barrackpore organized a Brainstorming Workshop on Sisal Grading and Electronic Instrumentation on 25th August, 2017 at Sisal Research Station, Bamra, Odisha.

Dr. D. K. Kundu, Overall In charge of Sisal Research Station , Bamra, Odisha in his inaugural address said the importance of Sisal fibre and  problems which need to be addressed with locally adaptable, practicable and economically viable technology interventions. Dr. Gautam Roy, Head, QE&I Division of ICAR-NIRJAFT & Principle Investigator of CRP project ICAR-NIRJAFT-2 elaborates the aims and objectives of the brainstorming workshop. Six presentations were made including agricultural practices, grading of sisal fibre and related electronic instruments developed by NIRJAFT. After the presentations, the instrument developed for Sisal fibre were displayed and shown the working system to the participants

There were approximately 60 participants at the workshop, reflecting a wide range of representation from State Government Officials, Sisal Farmers, NGOs, Researchers and Academia and KVK personnel. Among the dignitaries DFO, Bamra and Assistant Director, Horticulture, Govt. of Odisha were also present.


During the discussion the participants showed keen interest about sisal cultivation and grading of the fibres.


A 6-days Training Programme on Manufacture of jute handicrafts at KVK, Mayurbhanj-I, Odisha on August 22, 2017.



Kolkata, August 22, 2017:

A 06-days training programme on “Manufacture of jute Handicrafts” under Agri Business Incubation (ABI) Project, ICAR-NIRJAFT, Kolkata was inaugurated at KVK, Mayurbhanj-I, Odisha on August 21, 2017.

Shri Dillip kumar Baxi, General Manager, DIC, Mayurbhanj, Chief Guest highlighted upon the government incentives available in setting up of agro-based enterprises.

Shri Malay Dwari, Soil Chemist, Guest of Honour briefed about the importance of training programme on jute handicrafts.

Dr. Laxmikanta Nayak, Senior Scientist, ICAR-NIRJAFT, Kolkata has coordinated the programme and said about the importance of Agri Business Incubation project.


A 3-day Training Programme on Natural Dyeing on Jute & Allied Fibres Inaugurated at RKM, Sargachi, July 26, 2017.



Kolkata, July 26, 2017:

Training progamme on “Natural Dyeing on Jute & Allied Fibres”, organised by ICAR-National Institute of Research on Jute & Allied Fibre Technology, Kolkata, under the project “Agri-Business Incubation” during July 26-29, 2017, at Rama Krishna Mission Ashrama (RKM), Sargachi, Murshidabad, West Bengal. There were total fifteen (15) women participants participated in this training programme. This training was imparted to those trainees who has already undergone other training on jute like, jute bag and jute handicraft making, impared by ICAR-NIRJAFT, Kolkata. The module of the training consisted of theory and hands-on training on bleaching and dyeing of jute. The programme was co-ordinated by Dr. A. N. Roy, Director (Acting), Dr. N.C. Pan, PS & Head, Dr. S. N. Chattopadhyay, PS, and Dr. S. Debnath, PS of ICAR-NIRJAFT, Kolkata and Honb’le Tushar Maharaj of RKM, Sargachi. The practical demonstration was impaired by Sh. A Khan, S.T.O. of ICAR-NIRJAFT. This training programme was organised in association with RKM, Sargachi.


A 3-day National Level Training Programme Inaugurated at ICAR-NIRJAFT, July 18, 2017.

A 3-day National Level Training on “Production and retting technology of Jute/Mesta/Ramie/Sunnhemp including other related aspects” sponsored by National Food Security Mission (NFSM) - Commercial Crops, Department of Agriculture Cooperation & Farmers Welfare,  Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare, Govt. of India was inaugurated at  ICAR-National Institute of Research on Jute & Allied Fibre Technology, Kolkata, today.

Dr. S.K. Biswas, Ex-Directror, Directorate of Jute Development has attended the programme as Chief Guest and highlighted upon the issues on production and marketing of jute crop. Dr. K. Manoharan, Director, Directorate of Jute Development has graced the occasion as guest of honour and complemented the role of ICAR-NIRJAFT in organizing such training programmes. Dr. G. Basu, Director (Officiating) briefed about the need of value addition & product diversification in jute & allied fibre sector. Dr. Laxmikanta Nayak, Senior Scientist has coordinated the programme.

Twenty five trainees from different jute growing districts of West Bengal, Bihar, Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh & Tripura have participated in this programme.

Union Minister of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare visits at ICAR-NIRJAFT, June 13, 2017.



Kolkata, June 13, 2017: Hon’ble Minister of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, GoI visited ICAR-NIRJAFT, Kolkata today. Dr. Goutam Roy, Director (Actg) welcomed Shri Radha Mohan Singh as well as representatives from different ICAR institutes (ICAR institutes located in the eastern region viz. ICAR-ATARI, Kolkata, ICAR-CRIJAF, ICAR-CIFRI, Regional Stations of CSSRI, NDRI, CIFE and all KVKs) , staffs of ICAR-NIRJAFT and brief about the history of the institute. He also highlighted the present developments, achievements about the institute and initiatives taken by the institute in accordance with the Central Government policies like Mera Gaon Mera Gourav, Cashless transaction under Digital India programme, Swacch Bharat Abhiyan etc.

In this review meeting, the Hon’ble Minister interacted with all the representatives from the ICAR Institutes within and surrounding Kolkata. The Minister in his speech emphasized the role of Krishi Vigyan Kendra’s (KVK) in betterment of farming community. He told that the field extension work to be done by the KVKs in a more systematic way so that the farming community will get maximum benefit by the technologies developed by the scientists. The minister focused on Integrated Farming System (IFS) and told to promote this methodology in farmer’s field through KVKs. He stressed upon the digital technologies for rapid improving livelihood of the farmers. While interacting with the scientist and staff of he focused on the technologies that will increase the productivity.

The programme was concluded with vote of thanks by Dr. A.N. Roy, HoD, ToT Division.


Closing Ceremony of Swachhta Pakhwara at ICAR-NIRJAFT, May 31, 2017.



Kolkata, May 31, 2017: The fortnight celebration of Swachhta Pakhwada (16.05.2017 – 31.05.2017) was initiated on 16.05.2017 by taking swachhata pledge and formation human chain and which ended on 31.05.2017 by valedictory function. In this 15 days period several programmes were organized as mentioned below.

  • Essay competition on the topic “cleanliness drive in our society” for school students from a) The Future Foundation School b) Mansur Habibulla Memorial School participated in the completion and prizes were distributed on valedictory function on 31.05.2017
  • Competition was also arranged for office staff regarding writing of Slogan and Short poem based on cleanliness drive. The prizes were distributed to 1st, 2nd, 3rd position holders.
  • During this period every employee of the institute devoted 30 minutes time every day for cleaning the identified area for each of them
  • In order to make the institute premises clean and green, several indoor plants were placed in different areas which will be maintained on regular basis.
  • Campus clean drive was taken by different divisions, sections and cell of the institute to remove all the unwanted materials from the campus.
  • The compost pit of the institute was renovated and production of bio fertilizer has been initiated from bio-wastes.
  • All the scavenging contractual staffs were felicitated in the valedictory function to encourage them for doing better cleaning efficiently throughout the year.
  • Health environment and cleanliness goes hand in hand. So, a health check up camp was organized on 29/5/17 in collaboration with Apollo Clinic, Bansdroni for examination of important health parameters for all regular and contractual staff and it was an overwhelming success.

The fortnight program was ended by a valedictory function where chief guest Sh. R K Mitter, Principal, The Future Foundation School spoke about the duty of all citizens to keep our country clean and green with numerous examples. All section of staff of ICAR-NIRJAFT, students, guardians and teachers were present in the function. A small cultural event also organized in this occasion. The programme ended with vote of thanks.


Celebration of Swachhta Pakhwara at ICAR-NIRJAFT, May 16-31, 2017.



Kolkata, May 16, 2017: All the staff members of ICAR-NIRJAFT took the Swachhta Pledge and formed Human chain on 16.05.2017 as a part of the celebration of Swachhta Pakhwara during 16-31st May, 2017. A number of programmes are scheduled to be organized during this period to emphasize the need for cleanliness and to make our country clean and green. The programmes are being coordinated by Dr. Rina Naiya (Basak) Nodal Officer, Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan, ICAR- NIRJAFT.


Visit of B.Sc. (Agriculture) students at ICAR-NIRJAFT, 04.04.2017.



Kolkata, April 04, 2017: A group of four staff member and 106 students of third year B.Sc., (Agri.) students of College of Agriculture, Vellayani, Trivandrum, Kerala - 695 522 led by Dr. ASAnil Kumar, Professor & Head, Department of Agronomy had visited the Institute on 04.04.2017. Dr.Gautam Roy, Director (Acting) welcomed the staff members & the students and described the research and developmental activities of the institute on jute and allied fibres. Research activities of all division of NIRJAFT were described to them in four batches by Dr. L.K.Nayak, Senior Scientist, ToT Division, Dr. S.C.Saha, Senior Scientist, QEI Division, Dr. S.Debnath, Principal Scientist, MP Division and Dr. K.k.Samanta, Scientist, CBP Division respectively. Dr.L.Ammayappan, Senior Scientist, CBP Division coordinated the program.


Inauguration of Wireless Internet facility at ICAR-NIRJAFT Office campus, 25.03.2017.



Kolkata, March 25, 2017: Dr. Nabarun Bhattacharyya, Director, C-DAC, Kolkata has Inaugurate the WiFi facility for ICAR-NIRJAFT campus. Thirty Access Point and 20 gigabit switch with rack have been installed to cover the Institute campus. All WiFi device have capable 300 Mbps speed data transfer.  WiFi internet facility has been provide by using NKN connectivity.


Farmers-Scientist Interface organized by ICAR-NIRJAFT, 02.03.2017.



Kolkata, March 02, 2017: ICAR-National Institute of Research on Jute & Allied Fibre Technology, Kolkata organised a Farmers-Scientists Interface here today. Twenty one (21) farmers from Pukhuria Village, Chapra Block, Nadia District, West Bengal have attended this interface.

At the beginning, Dr. S. Debnath, Principal Scientist has welcomed the farmers to this institute and elaborated upon the R&D works carried out at this institute & the objectives of this interface.

Dr. Gautam Ray, Director (Acting), ICAR-NIRJAFT stressed upon the importance of processing & value addition in jute & allied fibres.

Dr. A.N. Roy, Head, Transfer of Technology Division has briefed about the training programmes given by ICAR-NIRJAFT for development of jute handicrafts & other value added products.

Dr. D.P. Ray, Senior Scientist highlighted upon the accelerated retting technology developed at this institute and urged the farmers to adopt this new technology for getting quality fibres.

Dr. S.C. Saha, Senior Scientist has given a talk on the new grading system developed at this institute.

Scientists from ICAR-NIRJAFT discussed the issues related to extraction, retting, grading, chemical processing & mechanization in jute & allied fibres.

Farmers took keen interest in learning the latest developments in extractors, improved retting technologies & grading instruments.

Training on Manufacture of Jute Handicraft organized by ICAR-NIRJAFT, 22.02.2017.



Kolkata, February 22, 2017: A 06-days training programme on “Manufacture of jute Handicrafts” under Agri Business Incubation (ABI) Project, ICAR-NIRJAFT, Kolkata was started at KVK, Kendrapara (OUAT) Odisha from february 22, 2017. Twenty (20) number of female trainees from Kendrapara district of Odisha associated with agro-based craft works have participated in this programme.

In the inaugural session today Mr. P.K. Mishra, Deputy Director Agriculture, Kendrapara has graced the occasion as Chief Guest and briefed about the importance of jute in value addition & diversification. Mr. Madhusudan Dalai, Assistant Director Horticulture, Kendrapara has graced the occasion as Guest of Honour and highlighted upon the facilities available for setting-up agricultural enterprises. Mr. L.K. Mohanty, Senior Scientist & Head, KVK, Kendrapara has highlighted upon the market demand of jute handicrafts. Dr. Laxmikanta Nayak, Senior Scientist, ICAR-NIRJAFT, Kolkata has co-ordinated the training programme and briefed about entrepreneurship development through manufacture of jute goods. Mrs. N. 79th Foundation Day Celebration & 4th C R Nodder Memorial Lecture organized by ICAR-NIRJAFT, 03.01.2017.



79th Foundation Day and C R Nodder Memorial Lecture, January 3, 2017: ICAR-NIRJAFT celebrated its 79th Foundation Day on 3rd January, 2017 and the celebration was inaugurated by Hon’ble Shri Sudarshan Bhagat, Minister of State for Agriculture and Farmer’s Welfare, Government of India. Dr. G. Roy, Director, ICAR-NIRJAFT, welcomed all the delegates and described briefly the salient achievements of the institute infrastructural developments and objectives of the Foundation Day celebration. The Foundation Day lecture was presented by Dr. K.K. Satapathy, Former Director, ICAR-NIRJAFT. He described in details about establishment of Indian Central Jute Committee and its gradual development to National Institute of present form. Moreover, he presented the overall situation of jute fibre utilisation at present and its future trends. Shri Sudarshan Bhagatji in his address congratulated all the past and present staff of NIRJAFT for its glorious past and present achievements and asked them to rededicate on the Foundation Day to perform better and better in their respective field of work. A scientific book “DEWANJALI” in Hindi was released by the Hob’ble Minister in this occasion.

The foundation day lecture was followed by 4th C R Nodder Memorial lecture which was delivered by Dr. S. Sreenivasan, Former Director, ICAR-CIRCOT, Mumbai. He talked on the theme entitled,” Newer Pathways for Lignocellulosic Natural Fibres to Contribute to Energy & Environment”. He talked about the eco-friendiness of the lignocellulosic fibre and its utilization for effluent treatment and production of bio-energy. In the Presidential Address Dr. R.P. Kachru, Former- ADG (PE), ICAR, New Delhi elaborated the need for natural fibres and alternative sources of energy for jute processing. A brief cultural programme was organized by staff members of the institute. Representatives from nearby ICAR Institutes, a large numbers of retired employees and all the present staff of the institute were present in the celebration. The programme was ended by hearty vote of thanks by Dr. S.N. Chattopadhyay, Principal Scientist and Chairman of the Organizing Committee.

NIRJAFT has been selected for 3rd prize for the year 2010- 2011 regarding outstanding implementation of the Official Language Policy of the Union in region" C " under domain of Regional Implementation Office (E.R) held at Auditorium, Indira Gandhi Science Complex Planetarium, Belly road, Patna on 9th February, 2012. Institute was received the shield and Commendation Certificate in the annual conference and zonal official language felicitation celebration and colloquium.
